Sprout Pencils

Sprout™ is a pencil that wants to be a plant when it grows up. When the pencil gets too short to use, plant Sprout to grow herbs in your garden or sunny window! Created by a group of MIT students as their Course 2.744 final project. Eight herb pencils in an attractive box.

Herbs are basil, mint, sage, thyme, sunflower, lavender, forget me not and cherry tomato. Photos courtesy of Democratech.

Sprout was conceived within a graduate product design course, where studens were broken into groups and assigned the task of developing and  designing a new product for an "eco-friendly office of the future". The group that became Democratech asked themselves: What if instead of throwing your pencil stubs away, you could plant them and have them grow into something delicious, beautiful, and fun. What if pencils could grow? And Sprout was born!

Sprout is designed around a high-quality Ticonderoga cedar pencil body from sustainably harvested wood. No eraser is included for reasons of quality (it was hard to find an eraser that would meet their exacting specifications), cost and complexity.

Seed funding for Sprout was raised on Kickstarter. Planting instructions can be found here.

The seed capsule is water activated. The first few times you water, Sprout activates the capsule and starts the seed's germination in about a week. The pencil shaft can be kept in the soil as a helpful labeled planting marker or it can be removed.
