Privacy Policy

Your privacy is important to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (“MIT”) and the MIT Museum (the “Museum”), and we are committed to respecting that privacy. This Privacy Policy (the “Privacy Policy”) describes our practices with respect to information you provide to us when you use this website (the “Site”), which hosts the MIT Museum Online Store (the “Online Store”). (Whenever the terms “we,” “us,” “our,” or other similar terms are used herein, such terms refer collectively to MIT, the Museum, and the Online Store.)

This Privacy Policy is incorporated by reference into, and made a part of, the MIT Museum Online Store Terms of Use (the “TOU”). As set forth in the TOU, by accessing this Site you agree to be bound by the TOU in their entirety, including this Privacy Policy. Capitalized terms in this Privacy Policy shall have the same meaning as in the TOU.

As detailed more fully below, this Privacy Policy describes the information about you that we gather and track, how we use that information, and with whom we share that information.

In general, you can visit the Site without telling us who you are and without revealing any personal information about yourself.

In using specific features of the Site, such as when you purchase items through the Online Store or provide User-Generated Content, you will be asked to give us personal information, such as your name, email address, mailing address, or phone number, that will be needed to (for example) correspond with you or process an order. Aside from aggregating random sampling data to allow us to check on our own performance, it is our intent that your personal information will be used only to fulfill the request(s) you make of us, to allow us to contact you for marketing purposes (unless you opt out) or if there are any problems with your request, to maintain a historical record of transactions and requests, and for other reasons that are incidental to or reasonably necessary for our regular operation of the Site (for example, we may need to share this information with vendors with whom we contract to perform certain functions of the Site). We may also post User-Generated Content that you provide to us, such as reviews of items you have purchased through the Online Store. We will not exchange or sell your information, including your email address, to third parties. We may, however, share your information with other administrative units at MIT as reasonably necessary to operate the Site.

We intend to protect the integrity of your personal information. To do this, we have implemented appropriate technical and organizational measures, such as using a Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliant payment processor and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption for transmission of credit card numbers and passwords, to help us keep your information secure, accurate, current, and complete. We will make a sincere effort to respond in a timely manner to your requests to correct inaccuracies in your personal information, to remove personal information you do not want stored, or to answer any questions you may have about our use of your information.

You can browse the Site without using the technology known as “cookies.” A cookie is a short identifier, stored on your computer, that a site may use to identify your computer. Certain optional features of the Site that do require us to identify your computer—for example, to match your computer with your order or wishlist—will require cookies. These cookies will be used only to perform the functions that you initiate.

We may collect anonymous information from visits to the Site to help us provide better customer service and a better customer experience. For example, we keep track of the domains and Internet Protocol addresses from which people visit, and we measure aggregate user activity on the Site, but we will not seek to connect this data to your personally-identifiable information. We, or the analytic vendors we select, may use this data to analyze Site usage trends and statistics to help us improve our Site.

When we collect personal data from you in connection with a transaction (an order, email request, etc.) we may extract some information about that transaction in an anonymous format and combine it with other anonymous information such as clickstream data. This anonymous information is used and analyzed only at an aggregate level to help us understand trends and patterns in our Site’s usage.

The Site may contain links to other websites. As set forth in the TOU, we are not responsible for the terms of use, including the privacy practices, or the content of these websites.
